Lollapuzzoola 8, the “greatest crossword tournament in New York City,” is just under two weeks away. The tournament will be held at All Souls Church in Manhattan’s Upper East Side starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday August 8. You can still sign up to be a single or pairs solver for the on-site tournament, or sign up to receive the puzzles by email and solve and home. I can’t make the tournament this year but I will have a presence as part of a tournament sponsorship of independent puzzlemakers organized by Ben Tausig. Visit the Lollapuzzoola website for more information.
For West Coast crossword fans, the seventh Crosswords LA tournament is set for October 24, tentatively in UCLA’s Fowler Museum amphitheater. Tournament organizer Elissa Grossman has named yours truly as the puzzle wrangler for this year’s tournament. The position has been held previously by Tyler Hinman, Doug Peterson, and Amy Reynaldo, so I have some big shoes to fill. Crosswords LA raises money for literacy charity Reading to Kids. Check in with the tournament website over the next few months for updates.
